mysms and Apple’s iMessage update

Posted in mobile news, mysms news by mysms

As you might know, Apple announced an update for its iMessage application at the WWDC yesterday.

Some of our users and supporters contacted us, because they thought Apple’s new functionality looks like what mysms has offered for years, and were wondering if this changes anything for mysms.

What’s important here is that Apples messages app is offered only to iOS users. Our goal has always been to bring cloud-based messaging to all your devices, and we don’t want to restrict ourselves to any platform or device. Nevertheless, mysms was often referred to as “iMessage for Android” in the past. Today, Android is still our top smartphone platform and mysms takes full advantage of the Android operating system with custom notifications, themes, plugins, widgets and much, much more. These features allow you to adapt mysms to your specific needs and this won’t change in future.

We have a lot more to show you in the upcoming weeks and are already looking forward to tell you more about it 🙂

What is this all about?

During the time of our partnership only B&YOU customers and existing mysms users have the exclusive right to use our service in France. The co-branded applications of mysms are named SMS & YOU, come with a brand new design and are available for free. SMS & YOU will fully replace our actual service in all French stores.

Why have we decided to cooperate with B&YOU?

Bouygues Telecom is a global provider of mobile communications, landlines, TV, internet and cloud services. With their business division B&YOU the company serves more than 1 million customers. B&YOU shares our passion for online and loves to explore new innovative features as much as we do. As B&YOU was on a lookout on a customized solution to improve the texting experience of their customers, the partnership with mysms is the perfect match.

mysms becomes SMS & YOU – What does that mean for you?

In the last few months we have been developing a product that comes with a co-branded design and offers synchronized texting for every B&YOU user. B&YOU users can download the phone app from the links mentioned below to register for the service. After the setup and the initial sync messages can be sent and received on a tablet, desktop and via the web.

Existing mysms users need to switch to the new SMS & YOU apps on all devices. You can log in with current mysms account and all messages will also be available in the SMS & YOU apps.

At the moment the SMS & YOU apps are available for the following platforms for free (click on the links for a direct download):

– Android phone

– Android tablet

– Web app

Additionally, SMS & YOU applications for all other platforms will be added within the next few weeks.

If you have any feedback or other requests please let us know in the comments.

We’re very looking forward to the future cooperation with B&YOU and hope that you, all mysms and B&YOU users from France, share our excitement!

[quick tip] Keep track of your monthly SMS usage

Posted in mysms quick tips by mysms

For those of you who do not have a contract which includes unlimited free texting, knowing how many texts you have already sent during the current month can be very useful. That’s why we integrated this feature.

Have a look at the mysms settings

Have a look at the mysms settings

You will find the option “SMS Usage” in the mysms settings on your phone under “Sending text”. This gives you a good overview of your SMS usage during a month. The start of the period can be changed manually by tapping on the current one and choosing “Change period…”.

The cool thing is that it is divided into “Remote SMS” and “SMS from phone”.  You always know how many texts have been sent directly on your phone and how many have been sent via another device (tablet, desktop, web).

We hope that helps you to better keep track of your SMS usage and consequently also your costs. Are you surprised how many messages you send during a month? Do you send more messages remotely or directly from your phone?

All about text messaging patterns

Posted in messaging by afeiner

When my 18 year old cousin moaned the other day about her $200 phone bill, I asked her how many texts she sent last month. She said she was texting like usual and did not send that many messages. Turned out she had sent over 3000 (!) texts that month, on average 100 texts a day.

Texting is the most used way to stay in touch with our family and friends. But not everybody is a heavy texter like my cousin. Each of us uses texting in a different way, depending on our individual needs and wants. Lately I have discovered a report from Ofcom that was published a few weeks ago. According to them, there are five different types of people who text:

1. Always-on communicators (=the heavy texters)

Above all, there is the user group who communicates a lot; we call them ‘always-on’ communicators. This group cannot live without their mobile device. They often own a smartphone and use their mobile phone primarily to text and call friends and family. As the name suggests, ‘always on’ communicators are open to use other communication channels like social media to share contents with a wider public and newer forms of communication such as VoIP. This segment is the youngest user group with a high proportion of people still in education.

2. Enlightened communicators (= the geeks)

This group of people is still young (most of them were under 35), but more likely to work. They like to stay on top of new technologies and are the ones that are often referred to as “techies”, “geeks” or also “early adopters”. They use texting and mobile calls more often than the other groups to contact friends and family, but also like to use email and social media for communication. However, if you compare this segment to the ‘always-on’ group, they are a lot more reluctant about sharing information online.

3. Middle-of-the-road communicators (= the average Jane & Joe)

If you haven’t felt related to one of the groups above, maybe you are more in the ‘middle-of-the-road’. This group likes to use a range of methods for communicating with others including traditional and newer forms of communication. Their favorite ways to keep in touch with others are text messaging, mobile calls and post. In general, they “let others try out new services first before giving them a go themselves”.

4. Conventional communicators (= the fixed landline generation)

This group is the oldest segment and most likely to be already retired. As you can imagine, conventional communicators prefer to use traditional communication methods such as landlines and are the least open to new technologies and new communication forms. They tend to send a card or a present in the post for special occasions (like birthdays…).

5. Detached communicators (= the occasional texters)

The final group consists of those of us who don’t communicate a lot. The most preferred way of contacting friends and family is text messaging, but communication is not that important to this group in general. They hardly use mobile or landline calls, but are more open to quick text-based forms of communication like micro-blogging on Twitter. Compared to the other groups, detached communicators are often men across a wide range of ages.

Communicators of all groups claimed that they now communicate differently than only two years ago. Especially communication services that depend on internet and mobile phones have seen a large increase. The biggest winners are email and texting (17% of all adults now use them more), but also social networks are used more frequently (20% increase for ‘always-on’ communicators). The biggest loser is by far post (30% overall decrease), but also landline calls have started to decline. Ofcom believes that these trends will continue in the upcoming years. Receiving a post card might become a very special thing in a few years’ time.

What do you think of these trends in communication services and to which of the five communication groups would you classify yourself? Let us know in the comments.

[quick tip] Define your fav sending option (Android phone users only)

Posted in mysms quick tips by mysms

mysms offers Android phone users the great possibility, to not only send mysms friends messages, but also messages via a connector or texts via your mobile carrier. Maybe you have already seen that the mysms settings on your phone include an option called „Text via“. We’ve integrated this function so that you can arrange your sending preferences. It completely depends on you how your text message is sent.

How to change your sending options

How to change your sending options

If your recipient also uses mysms, the sending option “mysms friends” will always be the first choice, as this option is free of charge. In case you have installed a connector, you can choose, whether you’d like your messages to be sent primarily via this connector or via your mobile carrier. Don’t forget you’ll receive 10 free messages, if you download the mysms out connector :). However, if your contact is not supported by your preferred sending option, the next available option will automatically be selected. You can easily arrange your sending preferences with “drag & drop” for domestic and international texting. Your sending options will then be shown in the send button whenever you send a new message.

Additional preferences for specific contacts

After you’ve arranged your sending preferences for all contacts, you can additionally change this setting for individual contacts in a particular thread. Press and hold the send button to see all available sending options. Then choose one option and send a message. The option will be saved as first preference for this contact. Your “Text via” setting won’t be changed.

Please note: This option is a feature for Android phone users only, as iPhone and Windows Phone users are only able to send mysms friends messages. We’d love to provide our Windows Phone and iPhone users with the same feature set and we promise to implement the functionality as soon as restrictions of the operating systems change.
